Brand-new scholarship from criminal defense firm provides positive recognition for four students across the country
Pittsburgh – The attorneys at DRK Attorneys are pleased to award the firm’s first college scholarship designed to highlight both the challenges of living with mental illness as well as the possibility of a successful future. Lacey B., who attends college in Phoenix, received the $1,000 scholarship while two honorable mentions were also named: Samantha L. of Washington and Hannah M. of Memphis.
Designed for a student entering or enrolled at a college in the United States, the scholarship application included a personal essay and application form; in addition, recipients must have a diagnosed and documented mental illness and must be currently under the care of a licensed mental health professional. DRK Attorneys is recognized nationally for its support and services for individuals and families struggling with mental illness.
“These women each showed incredible determination, resilience and intelligence in their efforts to succeed in school and in life,” said Anthony DeLuca, DRK Attorneys. “We are thrilled to support Lacey’s college plans and to shine a brighter light on mental illness and the people who live with it and rise above it every day.”
Lacey, who is challenged with ADHD and nonverbal learning disability, wrote that, “My disability does not hold me back. It has inspired me to work harder than anyone else, dream bigger, and become bold. Through my challenges, I have developed character and resilience. I see my disability as my gift to change the world and make a difference by becoming a special education teacher who inspires students to dream and find passion for learning.”
She is majoring in Elementary Education and Special Education and has earned a Speech Academic Excellence Award, Outstanding Scholar Key Award, All Academic Award Swimming, Bible World Views Academic Excellence Award and maintained a 3.4 GPA.
